Therefore if anyone purges himself from these
Preached at Glen Aros Christian Fellowship on
Sunday 16th August 2009
Let’s Look at 2 Timothy 2:24-26
2Ti 2:24 But the servant of the Lord must not strive, but to be gentle to all, apt to teach, patient,
25 in meekness instructing those who oppose, if perhaps God will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth,
26 and that they awake out of the snare of the Devil, having been taken captive by him, so as to do the will of that one.
Look at verse 24
But the servant of the Lord must not strive, but to be gentle to all, apt to teach, patient,
• Are you a servant of the Lord?
• Then you must not strive
• You must be gentle to all
• You must have an aptitude for teaching
• And you must have Patience
Look at verse 25
25 in meekness instructing those who oppose, if perhaps God will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth,
• In meekness instructing those who oppose themselves
• If perhaps God will give them repentance
• To the acknowledging of the truth
Let me exhort you this morning
• To go about upholding the faithful Word
• To do it by sound doctrine
• To exhort and convince everyone you meet
• Be gentle to everyone who engages you with their hearts.
• Teach them what you know. Show them and help them to purge their vessel.
Let’s look at 1 Timothy 6:11-16
1Ti 6:6 Now godliness with contentment is great gain.
7 For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.
8 And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content.
9 But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition.
10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
11 But you, O man of God, flee these things and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness.
12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.
13 I urge you in the sight of God who gives life to all things, and before Christ Jesus who witnessed the good confession before Pontius Pilate,
14 that you keep this commandment without spot, blameless until our Lord Jesus Christ's appearing,
15 which He will manifest in His own time, He who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings and Lord of lords,
16 who alone has immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see, to whom be honor and everlasting power. Amen.
Look at verse 11
But you, O man of God, flee these things and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness.
• You, O man of God,
• There are things you have to Flee from
• There are things you have to follow after and pursue
• Righteousness
• Godliness
• Faith
• Love
• Patience
• Gentleness
How wonderful that this body of God’s people would be following after these things.
This body of God’s people have loved me with an everlasting love
When I failed, they with great patience help on to me.
There gentleness towards me has brought me to greatness.
Look how much they love one another.
I have not seen such faith, in all of the land
They wear their righteousness as a garment gifted to them.
Look at verse 9 and 10
But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition.
10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
• Do you desire to be rich? Is that your hearts desire above all else?
• Be careful you could easily into temptation and a snare
• Ending up with many foolish and harmful lusts which
• drown men in destruction and perdition
• For the love of money
• Is a root
• Of all kinds of evil
• Some have strayed from the faith
• In their greediness
• And pierced themselves through
• With many sorrow
Proverbs 11:28 says; ‘he that trusteth in his riches shall fail: but the righteous shall flourish as a branch’.
Verse 11
But you, O man of God flee these things…
And pursue, follow after…
• Righteousness
• Godliness
• Faith
• Love
• Patience
• Gentleness
In fact it’s my old hobby horse!
It is the fruit of the Holy Spirit of God.
Love
Joy
Peace
Long suffering
Gentleness
Goodness
Meekness
Self control
Faith
2Ti 2:15
Study earnestly to present yourself approved to God, a workman that does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the Word of Truth.
16 But shun profane, vain babblings, for they will increase to more ungodliness.
17 And their word will eat like gangrene; among whom are Hymeneus and Philetus,
18 who have erred concerning the truth, saying that the resurrection is already past, and who overthrow the faith of some.
19 Nevertheless the foundation of God stands sure, having this seal: "The Lord knew those who are His." And, "Let everyone who names the name of Christ depart from iniquity!"
20 But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honor, and some to dishonor.
21 Therefore if anyone purges himself from these, he shall be a vessel to honor, sanctified and useful to the Master, prepared for every good work.
22 But flee youthful lusts, and follow righteousness, faith, love, peace, with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.
Look at verse 19
Nevertheless the foundation of God stands sure, having this seal: "The Lord knew those who are His." And, "Let everyone who names the name of Christ depart from iniquity!"
That last part - Let everyone who names the name of Christ depart from iniquity!
Look at verse 22
22 But flee youthful lusts, and follow righteousness, faith, love, peace, with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.
• You are to flee youthful lusts
• You are to follow righteousness
• You are to follow Faith
• You are to follow Love
• You are to follow Peace
• You are to be among those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart
Wonderful!
There are things to flee as a Christian
There are those things which we are to follow after.
Look at verse 21
21 Therefore if anyone purges himself from these, he shall be a vessel to honor, sanctified and useful to the Master, prepared for every good work.
• If anyone purges himself from these, from what?
Let me remind you.
Youthful, profane lusts
The desire to be rich
Greediness
Iniquity
Striving
Profane and vain Babblings
Proverbs 16:8 ‘better is a little with righteousness than great revenues without right’.
• If you will purge yourself from these
• You shall be a vessel to honor
• A vessel that is sanctified
• You shall be a vessel that is useful to the Master
• A vessel that is prepared for every good work
These are the last words which Paul chose to leave with Timothy before he died!
Sobering words to any budding Christian!
Sobering words to us today
There is a fleeing from and a following after in the Christian life.
Romans 6:18 says: ‘now that you have been set free from sin, you have become a servant of righteousness’.
Most of you as vessels of the kingdom, only need a wipe with good soap and water on a daily basis.
You may be a vessel who needs more work; you need the brillo pad, and a good soak, and advice and help from a loving brother of sister!
Wonder of Wonders if the necessary purging is carried out the vessel
• You shall be a vessel to honor
• You shall be a vessel that is sanctified
• You shall be a vessel that is useful to the Master
• You shall be a vessel that is prepared for every good work
There is much good work laid out for those who are part of this body of God’s people.
Now is the time to do the purging.
Jesus left us a gift to enable us to do the work required, he has put us in a body with all the gifts any of us could ever need.
The Holy Spirit will guide you and lead you in to all the truth of it.
Follow him, be led by him, and become useful in his service.
Isaiah 3:10 ‘say to the Righteous that it shall be well with them for they shall eat the fruit of their doings’.
I say to you righteous, ‘it shall be well with you – you shall eat of the fruit of your doings’.
2Ti 2:24 the servant of the Lord must not strive, but to be gentle to all, apt to teach, patient,
25 in meekness instructing those who oppose themselves, if perhaps God will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth,
26 and that they awake out of the snare of the Devil, having been taken captive by him, so as to do the will of that one.
Philippians 4:8 ‘Finally brethren, whatsoever things are honest, just, pure, lovely, good report, if there be any virtue, if there be any praise, think on these things’.
God bless you.
